Yukon government, First Nations agree to separate school board, Indigenous-led schools

The Yukon government has agreed to establish a separate school board for First Nations, paving the way for schools geared specifically toward Indigenous students in the territory. The First Nation School Board Framework Agreement, signed by the Yukon government and 10 of the territory's 14 First Nations, lays out the process for establishing the school board under the territory's Education Act. (Mike Rudyk/CBC)A more recent report from Yukon's education department says a similar proportion — about 23 per cent — of public school students in the territory in 2018-19 self-identified as Yukon First Nations. The Yukon First Nations Education Directorate, an independent body set up last year to help create a separate school board, argues that the true figure is likely higher than that as some students choose not to identify as Indigenous. That report found a much higher rate of chronic absenteeism among First Nations students in Yukon, compared to non-Indigenous students.
