Youths rape in the name of Burundi leadersFrom OMEGA SSUUNA in Bujumbura, BurundiBUJUMBURA, (CAJ News) – YOUTH militia loyal to Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has openly threatened rape on critics opposed to the leader’s controversial rule. Local authorities partisan to the ruling party have made no attempts to stop the vitriolic youths that are a law unto themselves. Human Rights Watch regional researcher, Lane Hartill, said the Imbonerakure had struck fear into the hearts of Burundians suffering continued violations since Nkurunziza brutally secured another term as president in 2015. More than 390 000 Burundians have fled the country and another 146 000 are internally displaced. “Unfortunately, contrary to the ideals of the ruling party, certain youth sang a song that doesn’t correspond with the morals or the ideology of our party.”– CAJ News
