A fourth of young adults plan to work outside Hong Kong within the next five years, according to a survey by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. It also said only 16 percent of those intending to seek employment overseas said they expected to work permanently outside of Hong Kong. “Over half said they would consider returning to Hong Kong for employment if there are better development opportunities or after they have right of abode in other countries,” the federation said. Some are willing to return to Hong Kong for steady employment, and others are willing to take short-term employment or even long-distance employment.”The federation's Tony Lau Hon-yiu said the brain drain would worsen a shortage in the labor market, adding that Hong Kong should be prepared for such an eventuality. “Hong Kong can attract talent to return, and we can make use of talent located in different parts of the world to mitigate the impact of this talent loss,” Lau said.
