One might expect from the name VIKINGS that this Winnipeg quartet deals in some form of stentorian black metal, not least because a good number of bands who identify as descendants of actual Vikings deal in just that. Not so with these VIKINGS. There are no small statements to be found on Animal Kingdom. VIKINGS aim for nothing short of an anthem every time and, while occasionally one wishes Youngson would ease up on the passionate delivery here and there, the pop songcraft on display is of an inarguably high calibre. If they can get this material in front of the right people, VIKINGS won’t be a well-kept Winnipeg secret for long.
