Brooklyn quartet Dead Leaf Echo capably works both ends of the spectrum, shifting from shimmering to scorching at the drop of a hat yet rarely letting a solid melodic anchor slip from its grasp. Rather, Dead Leaf Echo deals in muscular, layered guitar-pop that often brings to mind Aussie jangle-rock heavyweights the Church at their swirliest — Dead Leaf singer/guitarist LG is dead vocal ringer for Church frontman Steve Kilbey — shot through with the brawniness of early Swervedriver. Is Dead Leaf Echo tearing shoegaze apart and remodelling it in its own image? No, but the band does know its way around its guitar pedals and My Bloody Valentine veteran engineer Guy Fixsen had a hand in the making of Strawberry Skin so . well, you know what you’re in for, at least.
