I had loving parents, a warm home, plenty to eat, books to read and goolies to play with. There was lots of money for Christmas presents, a special breakfast on my birthday, foreign holidays and the best imaginable private education. I was a bit on the short side and came to be quite near-sighted but, looking at photos, I think I had quite a nice face. And yet if I try to remember what my life looked like between the ages of 11 and 15, what I see is boys of my age blinking at me. Blinking fast and exaggeratedly.
