Higher taxes, shaky economic policy and high unemployment have led to unrest in several European countries. But because they didn’t meet the monetary criteria, nine of the 28 EU members have not adopted the euro. Examples of the EU’s rupturing include “Brexit” in Britain, the “yellow vest” movement in France and the financially troubled chancellorship of Germany’s long-serving leader Angela Merkel. The decision should force Britain into elections for the European Parliament this month — which could increase calls for Prime Minister Theresa May’s resignation. But surprisingly — mostly due to Britain’s recent problems with Brexit — countries that once mulled leaving the EU have begun to reconsider.
