He was commander of Amphibious Task Force “0” during the D-Day invasion, landing troops at Omaha. That successful duty was the culmination of years of practical experience of amphibious landings and maneuvers that he perfected. In February 1943, Hall became commander of the Amphibious Task Force for the U.S. Eighth Fleet off North Africa. During a London planning meeting in February 1944, Hall declared that he would not have enough firepower to support the assault. With the successful D-Day landings and the push of Allied troops across Europe in late 1944, Hall was transferred to the Pacific Theater of operations.
