Bohemian Rhapsody earned a mammoth $18.4 million yesterday, including $3.9m in Thursday previews. Folks wanted to see a Freddie Mercury biopic, the trailers promised a splashy and big-scale Queen biopic, and thus folks showed up. Bohemian Rhapsody scored an A from opening night Cinemascore polls, meaning that it could play well into December. The presumed $47m debut weekend will be (easily) the second-biggest launch for a musical biopic behind Straight Outta Compton’s $60m debut three years ago. Bohemian Rhapsody represents a bittersweet victory for Fox as it prepares to get swallowed whole by Walt Disney.
