With Teixeira expected to retire, only Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia and Brett Gardner remain from the 2009 championship roster. “And after this season I’m going to retire and do something else. Teixeira, one of the greatest switch-hitting first basemen baseball has ever seen, is in the final year of his contract with the Yankees. Teixeira got more playing time than he might have expected this season when his young backup, Greg Bird, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery during the spring.
