Xi Jinping’s power will grow to become more deeply embedded and endure longer, perhaps even longer than another five years. The “Chairman of Everything” has consolidated power to levels unprecedented since the notorious years of China under Mao’s leadership. Indeed, the very actions taken by Xi and the central leadership expose the weaknesses in the institutions of China. Opposition has been rare because economic growth has been consistently positive and strong for more than three decades. Without them, citizens have no protection and among the many drawbacks this brings is the risk of forestalling economic growth.
