(CNN) Virologist and infectious diseases expert Nathan Wolfe warned 12 years ago that the world didn't understand how to handle infectious diseases. "I believe in 50 years when people look back at this period of history they're going to say, 'They ran around trying to control diseases. But, they just didn't get it,'" Wolfe warned Anderson Cooper in 2008. As global Covid-19 deaths surpass 1.7 million, scientists believe that the disease jumped from animals to humans. Wolfe said that formerly remote biodiverse regions are now more interconnected with people due to deforestation and road construction.
