The Libyan elections targeting December 24 were set by a UN-backed roadmap adopted last year. A French presidential official told reporters at a briefing prior to the meeting that the situation remained vulnerable while the elections were imminent. On condition of anonymity, officials said some actors were ready to grab ambiguity in order to promote their interests. “They are clearly ambushing and trying to upset the election process,” officials said. The former Tripoli government was advised by the Turkish regular army in Libya and from its ally Syrian fighters, the Turkish government said.
