Leading the charge to upgrade the Upper Junction war memorial site are Otago Military Historical Group members (from left) chairwoman Christine George, Peter Trevathan, and Dunedin RSA president Lox Kellas. PHOTO: BRENDA HARWOODA local military history group has worked for the past year to clear and restore the site of the Upper Junction war memorial above Dunedin. The site, which was once part of the playground of Upper Junction School — destroyed by fire in 1945 — hosts memorial plinths for 17 former pupils killed in World War 1. Vested in Dunedin RSA for many years, the memorial site had become neglected and overgrown, until the newly formed Otago Military Historical Group took it in hand about a year ago. Some of the 17 memorial stones, now cleaned up and marked by white crosses, at the war memorial at the former Upper Junction School site.
