In addition to upgrading lower-tier schools, a portion of the funding will be directed at improving facilities in some existing Category A schools to ease overcrowding and enhance the overall learning environment nationwide. Iddrisu revealed that once the programme is fully implemented, roughly 30 Category C senior high schools, together with a number of Category B schools, will be upgraded under the initiative. “We have secured approximately US$200 million from the World Bank, with indications that the amount could be increased to US$250 million, to elevate several Category C and B schools to Category A status, while also expanding facilities in some top-tier schools,” the minister explained. According to the minister, the programme is part of the government’s wider agenda to narrow the gap between senior high schools across the country and to ensure that students, irrespective of where they live, benefit from improved infrastructure and equal educational opportunities.
