According to the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Center, there are more than 1.7 million internally displaced people across Ethiopia due to violence and conflict. In western and central areas, there is an ongoing armed conflict between the Oromo Liberation Army and the government of Ethiopia. Ethiopia has continued to follow the path to self-destruction and war with itself — and the international community is struggling to respond. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken on a couple of occasions directly with the Ethiopian prime minister, advising him to stop the war and focus on peaceful resolutions. But with the world’s attention focused on Ukraine and Russia, there is every chance that both sides in the Ethiopian civil war will use the stalemate to rearm for still more fighting.
