The study is looking into challenges for obese patients in acute care, cancer, cardiology and rehabilitation. Another obstacle is imaging machines, which are manufactured for standard-size patients, so most obese patients can't fit in them. Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto is redesigning some rooms with wider beds to accommodate obese patients. Stainless steel toilets replace porcelain ones to accommodate larger patients at Toronto's Michael Garron Hospital. Her group is currently developing "best practice" guidelines that would improve hospital care for obese patients.
