Of the 162 racehorses entered in this weekend’s 34th Breeders’ Cup world championships at Del Mar racetrack in San Diego, just three are trained by women. Two of them, Catherine Day Phillips and Josie Carroll, are Ontario residents hailing from Woodbine racetrack. Female trainers in thoroughbred racing are slightly more common than female jockeys (none in the 13 Breeders’ Cup races this weekend), and a total of six American or European women have saddled Cup winners over the years. Both Day Phillips and Carroll have been among the best in Canada for decades. “Her latest race was exceptional, and she was tenacious and gutsy.” Both Day Phillips and Carroll have been to the Breeders’ Cup twice before without much success.
