CANNES, FRANCE—The 69th Cannes Film Festival comes to a close Sunday with only one assured winner: women. And where we are in Cannes 2016 is a place where women have dominated most of the buzzed-about and prizeworthy films. Normally there are a wealth of men vying for the Best Actor prize here and few women in serious contention for Best Actress, but that’s been turned around at Cannes 2016. In Toni Erdmann, Sandra Huller plays a workaholic businesswoman struggling with two challenges familiar to many of her gender: sexism in the workplace and a domineering father in the home. The Best Actress category would be a tough one to win, since it is suddenly very crowded in this year of strong women at Cannes.
