Women warned to only drink alcohol with meals as liver disease leaps by a third

Figures show female liver disease has jumped more than a third in 16 years – the biggest rise on record. The research – published in The Lancet – is based on the One Million Women study of 50 to 64 year olds in the UK. Professor Nick Sheron, of Southampton University, said the news about drinking with meals should not be seen as reassuring. He said: “Alcohol causes a range of potentially devastating problems.”Katherine Severi, chief executive of the Institute of Alcohol Studies, said: “Consumption amongst young women and women over 55 has risen in recent decades, which has been linked to increases in alcohol related health problems such as liver disease and breast cancer. Men and women are advised to drink no more than 14 units a week – six pints of average-strength beer or 10 small glasses of wine.
