Women seek talaq rethink

Zakia Soman of the Andolan described the law board's defence of the triple talaq as anti-Islam and anti-Constitution. The law board's affidavit says: "Sharia grants (the) right to divorce to husbands because men have greater power of decision-making. Stating that the triple talaq is unilateral and arbitrary, the joint statement has argued that nowhere in the Islamic world is the triple talaq legal. The law board's "justification of polygamy and (the) triple talaq contravenes the Constitution and indeed the principles of gender justice in Islam," it says. In its affidavit, the law board had also said that although the triple talaq was a "sin" and the "least appreciated form of ending a marriage", the Shariat (Muslim personal law) permitted it.
