Women’s rights: one step forward, two steps backThe North Africa Journal – March 8, 2017 – Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. But as we stop for a moment to do a health check on gender equality and women’s rights, it’s hard to be fully happy with what we see around us. In fact, there is plenty of pessimism as the potentials of women’s rights have not been fully achieved, as we are witnessing setbacks in many societies. Specifically, in the case of this paper, a check on women’s rights in the Arab world suggests that we’re back to square one. Their power is extraordinary to the point that even the all-powerful President Sisi could not get them to revisit their position on the controversial topic of women’s rights.
