Woman escapes execution over blaze that killed 46 people, started as fire to 'embarrass' boyfriend

A 51-year-old woman responsible for a fire that claimed 46 lives in Taiwan has been sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors had initially sought her execution for the deadly blaze, and will be appealing the ruling. The court argued the offence of murder didn't stand because she hadn't "deliberately" caused the deaths. Authorities had said the blaze started when the defendant, Huang Ke-ke, 51, left unextinguished incense ashes on a sofa before leaving the building. Prosecutors said she deliberately started the fire to "embarrass" her boyfriend, who she suspected of cheating, and had shown no remorse for her actions.
