A female writer’s haunting story about two brothers and their experiences of love, loss and loneliness has captured first place in the Toronto Star 2017 Short Story Contest. McKerracher said what’s thrilling about the short story contest is that it provides such a large public forum for fiction. A Humber School for Writers panel read all the submissions and came up with a short list of about 30 stories. The winning entries were then selected by a judging panel: Vickery Bowles, the City of Toronto’s librarian; Pasha Malla, an award-winning Toronto short story author; Star books editor Deborah Dundas; and theatre critic and author Richard Ouzounian. Definitely something in the cultural air that’s finding its way into storytelling.”The Toronto Public Library and Humber College School for Writers have been partners in the contest for years.
