With ministry nod, Bengaluru will soon get suburban rail

BENGALURU: The long-awaited suburban rail system for Bengaluru has been finally approved by the ministry of railways with riders. It will be implemented by the railways, instead of the special purpose vehicle mooted by the Karnataka government. We want to start the work on suburban rail as of now for the benefit of commuters in Bengaluru and later bargain for 50:50 cost-sharing," Mahendra Jain said. "The railways has agreed to provide two MEMU rakes during the financial year and the remaining seven MEMU rakes in 2018-19 for manufacturing units of Indian Railways since 15 short-distance passenger trains require nine rakes,'' it stated. It has been over 12 years since the demand for a suburban rail across the city came up.
