I regrew my hair into a short afro and cut it all off again before it reached the length where its coarseness made combing a battle. French Cameroon gained independence in 1960, and the following year, the British-ruled part chose to reunite with it. Cameroon is now divided into 10 regions: eight francophone and two anglophone, with anglophones comprising roughly 17% of the population. Francophone children had long hair, francophone adults ruled the country – but I couldn’t be more pleased to be an anglophone. I keep growing it, despite the fact that, with every added inch, the challenge of managing it multiplies.
