With Taiwan talks, Ottawa is finally pushing back against Beijing

On the face of it, Ottawa’s move may not sound like much: International Trade Minister Mary Ng just said Ottawa will begin talks toward an investment deal with Taiwan. So kudos to Minister Ng and the government for drawing a line against Beijing. The Trudeau government says it intends to develop a “comprehensive Indo-Pacific strategy” after being so badly burned in China, and deeper relations with Taiwan should be part of that. Expanding trade and investment relations with Taiwan does not violate Beijing’s insistence that Canada and everyone else respect its “One China” policy. More broadly, it’s important to support a democratic nation like Taiwan as it comes under increasing political and military pressure from Beijing.
