Last year, in researching my upcoming book, THE NEW SCIENCE OF RADICAL INNOVATION, I interviewed Jonathan Rosenberg, Advisor to Alphabet Management, Google’s parent company. We discussed how organizations can stimulate radical innovation. And I think that was very much the story of Google, the incremental innovation in Adwords that led to entirely new innovation, an entirely new industry. Similarly, many radical innovations evolve into platforms on which other incremental innovations are built. Investigating what makes these colonies thrive teaches us how to induce radical innovation.
