James O'Connor became the 7th MLS coach this season to be fired after Orlando City failed to reach the postseason again in their fifth season in the league. ASSOCIATED PRESSOrlando City on Monday announced it had dismissed head coach James O’Connor just over a year after bringing the Irishman on board, as a consequence for the Lions yet again missing the MLS postseason. O’Connor is the seventh MLS head coach fired this season, surpassing the previous record of six from the year before. (There were nine MLS coaching changes total during 2018 season, but Gregg Berhalter, Tata Martino and Oscar Pareja left on their own terms.) This much is clear: More than ever, failing to reach the playoffs is seen as unacceptable to MLS owners.
