With 60% of world’s cases, India is global leprosy capital


Ahead of World Leprosy Day, WHO warns on scaling up efforts; focusing on preventing disabilities in kidsAhead of World Leprosy Day, on Sunday, India has been shamed for being the global capital of the scourge, with over 60 per cent of leprosy cases around the world originating in India. Data for the past 10 months shows detection of over a lakh cases nationwide. Hidden cases are a problem, says Dr Anil Kumar, Deputy Director General (leprosy), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi. “Of over a lakh cases, we have detected 32, 600 leprosy cases till now in active screening. Union Health Ministry has initiated a campaign called Sparsh, where in each village, Gram Sabhas will spread awareness about prevention of leprosy.
