After thunderstorms and snow caused power cuts and road closures overnight, more storms and possible tornados are forecast for Saturday as winter hits hard in parts of the country. Thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, heavy snow on mountain ranges, and possibly localised tornados. Heavy snow has closed the road to Milford Sound all weekend, while State Highway 8 – Lindis Pass – is currently closed, Waka Kotahi said. Heavy rain and wind gusts – potentially greater than 110kph – are forecast in these areas for Saturday. There is also an orange-level heavy snow warning for Fiordland, Clutha and Southland on Saturday, with 10cm up to 20cm expected above 300m.
