Winnipeg hairstylist chides contradiction in dreadlocked models controversy

A Winnipeg hairstylist says "it's typical" that a major U.S. fashion designer is gaining fame for using mostly white models to sport multicolored dreadlocks in a recent major show. But, Tina Opaleke says Marc Jacobs' cultural appropriation of the hairstyle exposes a long-standing double standard that people in the black community who wear it face. When a black person is seen with dreadlocked hair, however, "there's always a stigma associated with it," Opaleke said. But when white models at a fashion show don dreads, a contradiction emerges, Opaleke said. The best way for fashion designers like Jacobs to pay homage to the hairstyle is to have them hire predominantly black models to wear it, Opaleke said.
