Photo by Robert Edward AuctionsAt baseball cards shows I’ve attended over the past few years, several attendees have roamed the aisles in an effort to sell their stacks of small black and white baseball cards issued between 1887 to 1890. Named for Old Judge cigarette tobacco, they are among the earliest baseball cards. If you come across your own cache of N172 Old Judge cards (or OJs as their enthusiasts refer to them), your first step should be to buy a magnificent coffee table book, The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company 1886-1890, Old Judge. In his last January auction, Verkman says “at least 50 bidders competed the various Old Judge cards at all price points. He pitched complete games in both contests, but allowed 23 earned runs and threw six wild pitches.”Photo by Clean Sweep Auctions*”Toad” Ramsey.
