For a long time in America, however, quality was associated with how oaky and buttery the bottle was. The result was the opposite problem: Lean wines that were almost prickly in their lack of generosity. Which is exactly what Doug Shafer is doing with his eponymous Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay. It’s a delicious evocation of what makes this such an exciting category of wine right now, and I strongly recommend it. My red Wine of the Week comes from one of the Forbes 30 Under 30: Michael Hill Kennedy, who, like so many of us, wondered why consumers didn’t have the opportunity to taste the various components that go into top-quality wines individually.
