Windows v climate change: the battle to save heritage and the planet

Summer may finally be here, but Yulia Romanenkova can’t stop thinking about double-glazing. For two years she has been trying in vain to upgrade the single-glazed windows in her grade II listed £5 million house in Hertfordshire. Her house dates from the 18th century, but the large bay windows in her living room and kitchen are from the 20th century and “of no great antiquity or significance”, according to a heritage expert’s report. All she wants to do is replace the panes, not the frames, a tweak the heritage expert said would have minimal impact on the façade. “They still said no,” says Romanenkova, who is appealing the decision; the upstairs windows had new single glazing installed five years ago.
