By running for election as independents, former Liberal cabinet ministers Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott are biding their time. The pair understand all of this because, now that they’ve been ejected from the Liberal caucus, that’s their status now. Under that scenario, established political parties might suddenly regain their lustre for Philpott and Wilson-Raybould. Should Wilson-Raybould or Philpott contest any future Liberal leadership race, it’s quite possible that either could sign up enough non-Liberals to win. By boldly announcing their plans to run as independents in the 2019 federal election, they are doing exactly that.
