Nato will be a spectator, not a participant in the war. One consequence of a really major sanctions program is to tear down the veil of secrecy. The Chinese and the Russian may announce that they want to settle international trade using the Chinese Renminbi rather than the US dollar. War with a major sanctions program would be a tremendous blow to the stability of the world. Is the United States prepared to go to war with Russia over Latvia?
