Vladimir Putin has just made the North Korean situation more complicated. Russia has supported, in theory at least, U.S.-led sanctions aimed at forcing North Korea to end its nuclear missile program. Russia’s main interest to date has been to establish trade and infrastructure links with South Korea via the North. Those talks, which collapsed in 2009 amidst mutual recriminations, involved North and South Korea, Japan, China, the U.S. and Russia. In a statement, he said he hoped the Kim-Putin summit would lead to more talks between the U.S. and North Korea.
