While the tournament was open only to human competitors, the AI system, named Dr. Fill’s victory now begets just one simple question: if AI can beat humans at crosswords, will AI soon replace copywriters too? The AI system seems to have done both steps with ease and accuracy at the tournament. Then the NLP Group got roped in, and the group began working on the Berkeley Crossword Solver, or BCS, an AI system that would focus on reading crossword clues and generating possible answers. So the poor copywriter will have to one day perhaps compete against a software in AI that reads faster, absorbs faster, processes faster and outputs faster.
