Will AG continue to represent respondents in April Attacks petitions?


Colombo (News 1st); Further examination of the 12 Fundamental Rights applications filed with the Supreme Court regarding the 2019 April 21st Attacks, were postponed to the 07th of June 2021. The petitioners request the Supreme Court to order the Attorney General to file criminal charges against the respondents. Further, the petitioners request for an order to be made citing that the failure to prevent the attacks had violated the Fundamental Rights of all citizens. Senior Additional Solicitor General Priyantha Nawana appearing for the Attorney General requested the court for a period of 08 weeks in order to peruse and study the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry and determine if the Attorney General’s Department will continue to represent the respondents named in the petitions. Counsel said the continuous postponement of the examination of the petitions with further aggrieve the families of the victims of the attacks as well as those who were injured.
