Yesterday President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that a parliamentary select committee would be set up to consider the situation of the Independent Election and Boundaries Commission. The opposition Monday demos against the composition of the IEBC have already led to violence with five deaths so far. If the select committee’s work can create that confidence, it deserves all our support. The Secretariat has made huge progress in reorganising the IEBC since 2015 but it lacks universal popular support due to the mismanagement and failures of the past. It is vital that Kenyans trust the IEBC completely in 2017.
