Why today’s dream for a successful filmmaker is to make it in television (and not the movies)

In 2012, Justin Simien, an aspiring filmmaker from Houston, Texas, scraped together a little bit of money and shot a low-budget proof-of-concept video for a comedy called Dear White People. Season one of Dear White People the show premiered in its entirety on the streaming platform in Canada and the United States this weekend. Many of the major Hollywood directors of old got their humble start in television before graduating to the more reputable field. They talk about television, and write about television, and have arguments about television over dinner and drinks. It used to be that a short film was laboured over in order to prove to the people with money that its director had what it took to make a feature film.
