There’s reason to believe that, of all the winners from last night’s Emmys, it’s the heads of the Television Academy who went home happiest. When Jeb Bush draws the biggest laugh in a montage full of sparkling television personalities, something has gone wrong. Probably the best news for the Academy is that their plays for diversity managed to keep the industry-embarrassing call-outs and speeches to a minimum. Both young, on celebrated but niche shows, they are in profoundly actor-y parts, albeit ones that the Television Academy hasn’t always fully appreciated. It is only one year, sure, but in substance if not form, it was an Emmys show that was different from most of the others: a year when at least a few of the awards say more interesting things about the industry than any of the speeches.
