The first reports from the North Sea came out of northern Germany on Jan. 8, 2016. Two sperm whales — the world’s largest toothed predator — were found beached on an island. Within days, other reports of sperm whales washing up dead on North Sea coasts emerged — in The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and near Calais, France. Twenty-nine sperm whales died over a 25-day span, an unprecedented number. In other words: the sperm whales that perished in the North Sea were following an incorrect map.
