Why not kneel? How deep does 'rooigevaar' still run in the white South African psyche?

The different choices some of the Proteas made when they were allowed to show solidarity with the global struggle against racism last week at the start of a test match, raises questions about the attitudes of young white South Africans towards racial redress, writes Ben Winks. At the start of South Africa’s men’s Test cricket match against the West Indies last week, the Proteas were each allowed to choose how to show solidarity with the global struggle against racism, if at all. Like their Caribbean counterparts, all four Proteas of colour – Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi and Keegan Peterson – took a knee and raised a fist. They were joined by two white teammates – Rassie van der Dussen and Kyle Verreyne. The other white players – Anrich Nortje, Wiaan Mulder, Aiden Markram and captain Dean Elgar – did not kneel but raised a fist.
