It was obvious as soon as election night began that perceptions were going to be a problem. At the state level, the polls performed slightly worse than they normally do in an average U.S. election. While Biden has won Michigan by just under three percentage points, the polls were suggesting he had a lead of about 7.5 points. It's the only state projected by the Presidential Poll Tracker as a Biden win that has gone instead to Trump. Our understanding of this election was shaped in part by the polls.
