Newly fashionable Alpine wines, from the fresh, clean mountain air of Savoie and Jura on the eastern border of central France, are tailor-made for early autumn swigging. Having drunk my fair share of them on ski holidays, I was uncertain if it was the exhilarating mountain air that made these zingy whites and reds, part Alpine herbs, part wildflower meadow, so thrilling. But as winters went by and I traded up to better bottles, it was obvious that there were a host of delicious, quirky, often unique Alpine wines made from a wide range of rare, indigenous grapes, with refreshing fruity styles and the lower alcohol levels that now appeal to many drinkers.
