Many Greater Auckland readers have first-hand experience in some kind of street or road safety project intended to try something that isn’t business as usual. It’s one of the few nationwide innovation delivery programmes. We identified key elements of successful innovation within “human capital”: collaborative partnerships, people-centric approaches, communities of practice, and building innovation capacity. Innovation initiatives in transport need to reach equitable bike access, road safety, use of road space generally, more efficient freight, public transport, and decarbonisation. The size of the climate change, road safety, and other transport challenges, requires an appropriately sized innovation programme.
