Hockey landed hard at the centre of most Canadians’ radar last month when Don Cherry was fired from Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada. We are hockey fans, and have been in this country for close to 200 years. We think that Canada is a nation of gardeners — to a greater extent than we are hockey fans and players. In 2013, Statscan reported 60 per cent of Canadians grow food — not including those who devotedly grow, mow and maintain their lawns. And despite our love of hockey, and what the hockey commentators tell us, the sport does not have a lock on what it means to be Canadian.
