“I can’t make sense of it,” said Cindy Blackstock, executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. The motion also asked the federal government to further investigate the deaths and disappearances of children at the schools. While no one voted against the motion, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn’t participate in the vote — and members of his cabinet abstained from voting. Blackstock told the Star she was especially disappointed to see Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller and Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett abstain from voting. The pair, along with Trudeau, have been vocal in recent days about the importance of their relationship with Indigenous communities.
